Therapy costs and how to Access Medicare Rebates for Therapy

Fees and Medicare Rebates

Therapy session (50 mins) in person or online with an experienced psychologist, where you claim a Medicare Rebate. Book a long consult with your GP and ask for a referral under a Mental Health Care Plan. You can claim up to 10 rebates each calendar year (1 Jan to 31 Dec).

Therapy session under a GP referral - $285 (which means $143.15 out of pocket)

You are most welcome to come privately, in this case you do not need a referral from your GP or any other professional. Sessions in this case are $285 per 50 minute session.

Medicare Referral Process

Step 1: Book a GP appointment

Let the reception team know you're booking to get a Mental Health Care Plan — you may need a longer consult. If you feel nervous, that’s okay. Just be honest with your doctor about what’s been going on and why you're seeking support.

Payment is $285 debited within 24hours after your appointment and your rebate of $141.85 should arrive in your account within 1-2 business days.

Step 2: Ask your GP for a Meantal Health Care Plan and Referral Letter

Your GP will ask a few questions and may give you a short questionnaire. If you're eligible, they can prepare a Mental Health Care Plan — or in some cases, an Eating Disorder Treatment Plan, which allows for more sessions under Medicare.

Make sure your GP also includes a referral letter addressed to your chosen psychologist Katherine Sayer-Jones at Healing Place Psychology Practice. This is required to claim the Medicare rebate — a copy of the plan alone isn’t enough.

Step 3: Book your appointment and send your referral

Once you’ve booked your first session, please email your referral letter to katherine@healingplacepsychology.com.au before your first appointment. You can also ask your GP to send it directly to us via email or fax 02 9049 5052.

We’re an online therapy practice, offering all sessions via telehealth.
